About the Host

Akeela Karmali
Akeela Karmali is a nationally recognized leader in clinical coding, clinical documentation improvement (CDI), and health information management in Canada. She holds a BSc from McGill University and an MBA in Health Management from McMaster University, and has spent her career at the intersection of healthcare operations, data quality, and clinical intelligence. Akeela authored one of Canada's early CDI whitepapers, helped shape national conversations on documentation and coding quality, and has delivered CDI courses, webinars, and education programs to HIM professionals, clinicians, and healthcare leaders across the country.
Professionally, Akeela has led coding, decision support, and business intelligence teams at both community hospitals and large multi-site academic teaching hospitals. She sold computer-assisted coding solutions across Canada through 3M, later serving as CEO of 3terra, a healthcare technology company focused on data-driven clinical insights. She is a former CHIMA Board Member, an Instructor in McMaster University's Health Information Management program, and an Advisor to Toronto Metropolitan University's Health Services Management program. Through her work, Akeela is known for bridging frontline coding realities with executive strategy; bringing practical, Canadian-specific insight to the evolving worlds of CDI, AI, and healthcare data.
